A quarterback competition is brewing in Foxborough, as Cam Newton and Mac Jones are competing for the starting job for Week 1 of the regular season. On Thursday, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick provided an update on that battle.
During a one-on-one interview with NFL Network’s Willie McGinest, Belichick said the team’s quarterback competition has been “healthy” thus far.
“Cam’s getting better every day. Mac’s getting better every day. They’re pushing each other,” Belichick told McGinest. “I think competition makes us all better. So it’s been healthy, and we’ll see how it goes.”
Newton seems to have the early edge in the quarterback competition, but Belichick sounds pleased with Jones thus far.
“Mac’s competing well,” Belichick said. “I’d say really all of our rookies are doing a good job. They’ve embraced the process. They know they have a lot to learn, a long way to go. They’ve worked hard. They’ve studied hard. They’re certainly not there yet, but they’ve gained a lot of ground from back when we started in the middle of May.”

Eventually, the Patriots will have to start Jones to see what they have in the Alabama product. If he’s not ready to start Week 1 though, the Patriots are fortunate enough to have an experienced quarterback like Newton on their roster.
Newton wasn’t very productive through the air in 2020, but the former MVP should be a bit more comfortable in Josh McDaniels’ offense this year.
Patriots fans, who do you think will win the quarterback competition in training camp?
