Breaking: Commanders All-Pro Could Seek Trade After Stalled Contract Talks

June 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After optimism this offseason, the Commanders’ wide receiver Terry McLaurin could seek a trade since the team is stalling in contract negotiations. NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports that the wideout is unhappy with his current contract, and there’s a lack of progress for a new extension. While there hasn’t been any report of a holdout, there could be one if the Commanders continue to stall, which could lead McLaurin to sit out during NFL Training Camp. Originally selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product became the staple of this offense and had his best season, recording over 1,000 receiving yards for the fifth consecutive year.

There’s no doubt he will get better now that he has found his long-term quarterback, Jayden Daniels, but it won’t stop the wide receiver from leaving the team completely for an extension. Schultz mentioned that McLaurin came back to attend voluntary workouts after missing a few days, but left later during camp, and now the biggest question is if this will happen for mandatory camp. While there are no conversations about the Commanders considering trading him, if they can’t pay their No. 1 receiver, they could be in some serious trouble. McLaurin’s presence is valuable for the success of this offense, and they should probably want to keep the same momentum from last season.

However, many contracts fall out, and this could lead McLaurin to request a trade to these three teams.

Los Angeles Chargers

While the Los Angeles Chargers finally got some wide receiver help for Justin Herbert’s offense, they have yet to get a dynamic playmaker. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is arguably the best receiver on this roster since Mike Williams looks to be his old, depleted self, and 2025 draft pick Tre Harris is unproven. Quentin Johnston hasn’t been productive for the first two seasons of his NFL career, so they need an explosive wideout to help Herbert while he has the mojo to lead this offense.

When you share a division with the Ravens, Chiefs and Bills, head coach Jim Harbaugh must put Herbert in the right position to win football games. They have the financial liberty to negotiate a long-term deal with McLaurin if this trade happens. This could change the landscape for the Chargers as they have the funds to not only make him the No. 1 receiver for this unit, but also one of the highest-paid wideouts.

Baltimore Ravens

After extending Rashod Bateman, the Ravens don’t have the freedom to extend McLaurin, but he could join if it means playing for Lamar Jackson and getting a chance to win a Super Bowl. This isn’t to say the Commanders aren’t contenders, but the Ravens have been consistent for several years, and that’s what might intrigue McLaurin. Zay Flowers will remain as the No. 1 receiver on this roster, but McLaurin could be his own No. 1 playmaker too with the Ravens.

Kansas City Chiefs

This would be a no-brainer trade for the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had one of the worst passing seasons last year by his standards due to inconsistent weapons in his unit. Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice are the long-term wideouts for this offense, but they could bolster it by adding a fiery weapon like McLaurin to have a complete three-set armory.
