Forced to chisel down their rosters to 53 earlier this afternoon, several NFL teams made some notable cuts on Tuesday — including quite a few at the quarterback position.
While the QB release news of the day clearly goes to former Patriot Cam Newton, a couple other cuts are making headlines as well.
The Buffalo Bills released former fifth-round draft pick Jake Fromm.
Other notable QBs let go today …
• Bills QB Jake Fromm
• Jaguars QB Jake Luton
• Ravens QB Trace McSorley
• Bills QB Davis Webb— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) August 31, 2021
In addition to Fromm, the Bills also released reserve QB Davis Webb, leaving recently-signed Mitchell Trubisky as the team’s only backup for superstar Josh Allen.
After he was selected by the Bills with the 167th pick in the 2020 draft, Fromm earned as spot on the 53-man roster. But, amidst an unprecedented COVID-19 season, the former Georgia Bulldogs star experienced an unprecedented NFL rookie season.
Fromm was named as the Bills’ COVID-19 QB — meaning he practiced, watched film and worked out all in complete isolation.
Through the Bills’ final preseason matchup of the year against the Green Bay Packers, Fromm went 10/16 for 87 yards and rushed for a touchdown in the 19-0 victory.
In addition to these moves from the Bills, the Jaguars also cut Jake Luton, solidifying C.J. Beathard as Trevor Lawrence’s backup. Baltimore released Trace McSorley, leaving Tyler Huntley as the lone backup behind Lamar Jackson. And the Cowboys released two QBs, Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci, to lock in their QB depth chart with Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
