Chiefs 2025 Season Disaster Likely Spells End for 2026 Free Agent

December 10, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The 2025 campaign for the Kansas City Chiefs is over, which means pending free agent Marquise Brown will likely join a new team for next season. Kansas City attempted to come back late in the fourth quarter, but failed to convert a crucial fourth-down pass to the veteran Brown to move the chains. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been struggling to get his receivers to haul in his passes, and that will likely motivate him to move on from Brown instead. The bad news is that the Chiefs won’t have the financial means to re-sign most of their free agents, so that could leave Brown on the back burner.

Chiefs 2025 Season Disaster Likely Spells End for 2026 Free Agent Marquise Brown

Brown hauled in just one catch for 35 receiving yards, as the trend continues that he is no longer an effective weapon for this offense anymore. Through 13 games, the veteran has yet to make an impact on the field this year, tallying under 500 yards and four touchdowns. Originally selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Oklahoma product signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs in 2024, but that ended before he could step on the field due to a season-ending injury.

Brown appeared in the last weeks of the 2024 campaign, but he didn’t make much noise. Kansas City was still convinced to get something out of Brown since they panicked to extend him this past offseason due to the legal troubles of Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy. Since the Chiefs probably won’t consider giving Brown another contract, the veteran should be able to attract interest from these three teams in March.

Next Possible Teams

Washington Commanders

After losing Zach Ertz and Luke McCaffrey in one season, the Washington Commanders should be on the hunt for new receivers. Even though McCaffrey will return next year, the same can’t be said about Ertz. Brown is no replacement for Ertz, but if anyone can win the game of quick passes, it’s quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders’ possible signing of Brown this offseason will only make sense if Deebo Samuel doesn’t return.

With Terry McLaurin focused on the deep routes, it gives McCaffrey another weapon to help open up the aerial attack and create some separation to make life easier for Daniels. The veteran is past his prime, but as long as Washington can stay healthy, they might get themselves back in the wild-card in 2027.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the same can be said about the Dallas Cowboys, but they’re hanging by a thread. Jalen Tolbert will likely leave in free agency, and with an unproven Ryan Flournoy, the Cowboys will likely sign a low-stakes veteran receiver similar to what they had in Brandin Cooks this upcoming offseason. Of course, Dallas will need to re-sign George Pickens, but they also have to find a receiver who can come in for situational moments. Brown won’t be the same speedster, but it gives Dak Prescott another weapon to throw to in those quick slants, which they’ve been successful with this year.

Baltimore Ravens

Brown could return to the Ravens if he’s still a free agent before the 2026 season. This all depends on whether they decide to re-sign DeAndre Hopkins. Unfortunately, the team looks like they may miss the postseason despite having Lamar Jackson back in the lineup. The likes of Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman haven’t done much in this offense to stay on the same page, but maybe signing Brown to get that chemistry back again can spark this offense that was once running all over the place.
