Chiefs Released Notable Running Back On Monday

The Chiefs had to make the difficult decision to release one of their notable running backs on Monday afternoon.

Kansas City felt good about all five of its running backs during the preseason, leaving the organization with a difficult decision on Monday when it started trimming its roster to 53 players. Unfortunately, Darwin Thompson was the odd man out.

The Chiefs have released Thompson, who spent the last two years in Kansas City. He even went viral for getting in some extra training following a practice earlier this summer. Unfortunatley, the Chiefs don’t have room for him ahead of the 2021 season.

Kansas City is overflowing with talented running backs, including: Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon. The Chiefs also cut running back Derrick Gore on Monday.

Darwin Thompson played in 26 games during his two years with the Chiefs. He totaled 333 yards on offense and three touchdowns during that span. It’s probably only a matter of time before another NFL team picks up Thompson ahead of the 2021 season.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, are moving forward with a trio of Edwards-Helaire, Williams and McKinnon. The group could be special and is overflowing with potential. If the three meet expectations, this could be one of the best offenses Kansas City has ever had.

The Chiefs kickoff their 2021 season on Sunday, Sept. 12 in a showdown with the Cleveland Browns. It will be a rematch of last season’s AFC divisional round playoff game in which Kansas City escaped in a 22-17 nail-biter.
