Former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis surrendered to authorities in North Carolina after being charged along with nine others in an alleged attempt to defraud the NFL’s health care program for retired players.
The United States Department of Justice confirmed the development in the case, per Fox 5 DC.
Portis is one of 10 former NFL players charged in the case, which alleges players made fraudulent claims to the program. Officials said two other ex-players also would be charged.
Portis earned north of $43 million over the course of his career, which ended in 2010. Back in 2017, a profile detailed how he fell into debt after his playing career.
