On Monday night, the NFL world learned that Jon Gruden was stepping down as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders due to remarks he made in 2011.
The New York Times uncovered that Gruden used homophobic and misogynistic language in a series of emails he sent several years ago to former Washington general manager Bruce Allen and others around the league. He also used a racist trope to describe NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith.
With Gruden officially out as the head coach of the Raiders, several people are wondering what could’ve been had the NFL not settled former quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s lawsuit regarding potential collusion to keep him out of the league.
Basically, NFL fans believe the league settled with Kaepernick to avoid controversial and potentially disturbing remarks about him coming to light.

“This Gruden story is why the NFL just had to pay Kaepernick rather than go through all them subpoenas,” one fan said.

“So…..we’re talking a ton of emails well beyond Gruden,” another fan tweeted. “Starting to understand why the NFL wanted to settle with Kaepernick on his collusion case.”

Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL in October 2017. The NFL reached a confidential settlement with Kaepernick in February 2019.
The last time Kaepernick took a snap in the NFL was during the 2016 season. He has been linked to other teams in the past, but he never reached an agreement on a deal.
