College Football Model Names Country’s Most Talented Team

alabama football runs onto the field before the national championship.

Week 0 is in the books and now the 2021 college football season is ramping up quickly. The bulk of the country will be in action this weekend as the new year officially begins.

With Week 1 rapidly approaching, 247Sports released another set of rankings, trying to crown the most “talented” team in the country. Unsurprisingly, last year’s national champs claimed the top spot.

The Alabama Crimson Tide came in at No. 1 with a score of 1,004.04 on the 247Sports Team Talent Composite. Fresh off of an undefeated, national championship, Nick Saban re-tooled his roster with a plethora of top prospects and young talent, so that he can set his sights on another trip to the College Football Playoff.

Here’s what 247Sports said about the Crimson Tide headed into 2021:

“This should come as no surprise that Alabama is the nation’s most-talented team this fall judging by the fact Nick Saban landed the highest-rated signing class ever for the 2021 cycle and handled most the recruiting virtually. Alabama welcomed the No. 1 class nationally per the 247Sports composite during the 2017 and 2019 cycles as well. The rich indeed get richer. The Crimson Tide’s highest-rated player is none other than new starting quarterback Bryce Young, who played the second-team role to All-American Mac Jones last season. He is one of 14 former five-stars on this year’s roster, the third-highest total of elite prospects nationally.”

Alabama narrowly beat out Georgia in the 247Sports Team Talent Composite. The Bulldogs were less than three points behind the Crimson Tide with a score of 1,001.64.

Ohio State was next in third, Clemson came in at fourth and LSU rounded out the top five in the 247Sports rankings.

247Sports explained that its Team Talent Composite ranks every FBS team based on how each program’s players ranked in high school. The system accounts for transfers, dismissals and other early departures, but does not account for 247Sports’ transfer rankings. That means if a player got significantly better or significantly worse during with their old program, it wouldn’t be reflected in the Team Talent Composite.

The Crimson Tide will get to prove that they’re worthy of the top spot in the rankings right away this weekend. Alabama will play Miami on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.

The game will kick-off at 3:30 ET and air on ABC.
