The Georgia Bulldogs leapt up to No. 1 in the latest AP Poll following Alabama’s last-second loss to Texas A&M last weekend. At 6-0 through the first half of the year, a special season appears to be brewing in Athens.
Expectations will only continue to grow after comments from CBS analyst Gary Danielson earlier this week.
Ahead of the Bulldogs top-15 match-up with No. 11 Kentucky this weekend, Danielson compared Georgia to a notable team of the past: the 2019 LSU Tigers.
“They are a really focused, hungry team this year,” Danielson said of Georgia in an interview with Kentucky.com. “They remind me of the 2019 LSU team. …It’s not a surprise. Georgia has always recruited at a high level. Kirby has brought the structure of developing a little bit more and even in the way they recruit, they’re a little more solid in projecting the type of player that fits their system.”
Danielson pointed specifically to Georgia’s defense where he said some of the Bulldogs current players reminded him of Alabama’s top athletes.
“There are probably seven, eight, nine NFL players on that defense,” the CBS analyst said.
CBS’ Gary Danielson on what impresses him about Kentucky: “Their competitiveness, No. 1. It’s a group of guys that are trying to turn a program and it’s important to them that they feel they have a good team and they want to prove it.”

Although Danielson put the two teams in the same conversation, the 2021 Georgia unit and the 2019 LSU roster have their fair share of differences. The Tigers strength came from their offense, as Joe Burrow led a unit stacked with NFL talent. The Bulldogs are built around a stout defense, having given up just 33 points in their first six contests this year.
LSU went on to have a historic season in 2019, going undefeated as one of the most dominant teams in college football history. Georgia has a long way to go to reach that mark and will first want to focus on getting through a difficult SEC unscathed.
The Bulldogs will continue that pursuit this weekend against Kentucky. Danielson will be on the CBS broadcast of the game, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
