Instant analysis: Washington holds off Seahawks

November 30, 2021 by Redskins Wire

The Washington Football Team held off the Seattle Seahawks, 17-15, on Monday Night Football to improve to 5-6 on the season.

Washington dominated the second half of the game, including a 16-play, 84-yard drive that lasted eight minutes and 37 seconds. Unfortunately for Washington, it was without its field-goal kicker, as Joey Slye was injured late in the first half and was unable to kick in the second half.

Therefore, an epic drive relied heavily on Washington converting on fourth down, which it did earlier in the drive when quarterback Taylor Heinicke found wide receiver DeAndre Carter for a massive first down.

The game came down to another fourth down when Heinicke found tight end Logan Thomas in the end zone for what appeared to be a touchdown. The play was ruled a touchdown on the field. Further inspection showed the ball moved as Thomas went to the ground, although he still appeared to have control. The officials overturned the ball, and the Seahawks were back on offense.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson struggled all night, but as with any great quarterback, he marched Seattle down the field, with the aid of a pass interference penalty, and found wide receiver Freddie Swain for a 32-yard touchdown.

Uh oh.

Washington would have to defend the two-point conversion to hold on for the win. Again, Wilson looked for Swain, but Washington cornerback Kendall Fuller went high for the football and came down with the interception.

Next, the Seahawks would attempt an onside kick. After initially recovering the kick, a penalty was called — the right call — and Seattle would attempt another onside kick. This time, Washington wide receiver Adam Humphries recovers, and the WFT won their third consecutive game.

Heinicke completed 27 of 35 passes for 223 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Running back Antonio Gibson rushed for 111 yards and also caught seven passes. Fellow RB, J.D. McKissic, rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown, caught five passes, and scored another touchdown.

McKissic left the game on Washington’s final drive with what appeared to be some type of upper-body injury. McKissic will be a massive loss for Washington’s offense if he is out for any length of time.

Next up for Washington is a trip west to face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 13.
