Much of the conversation around New York Giants training camp has been focused on the health of Saquon Barkley. Although the team’s star running back is expected to be back on the field in Sunday’s season opener, fans have wondered if he’s actually ready to go and fully recovered from last year’s devastating injury.
Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett did his best to put those worries to bed with his remarks on Thursday.
Barkley was listed as a limited participant at practice, but Garrett was optimistic when talking about the running back’s availability this weekend. The Giants OC said that the 24-year-old has done a “great job” in his recovery and is already back to “100 percent.”
“A lot of confidence in him as a player,” Garrett said, via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. “I think he’s done a great job to get himself back healthy and 100 percent.”

Barkley tore his ACL in Week 2 of the 2020 season but has been working diligently to get back to full strength for 2021. Although Garrett still neglected to share if the Giants running back will get a full workload, he said that the ballcarrier would “certainly get his opportunities.”
“Trust me, I was on the other side with this guy, and he’s one of those dynamic players, both in the running game and the passing game,” Garrett said. “He’s one of those players who can make a three-yard run and a four-yard run and a two-yard run or a one-yard run. And then he catches a screen and goes for 65 yards. We’ve lived that, trying to stop him. It’s great to have him on our side. We’ll try to give him opportunities.”
The Giants are a different offense with Barkley on the field. He’s a strong runner and a reliable pass-catcher out of the backfield, so he should be able to open things up for quarterback Daniel Jones and New York’s offensive line.
The Giants will take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday this weekend at 4:25 p.m. ET. Time will tell how much Barkley gets to play in the contest.
