Pro Football Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson is no stranger to make some bold picks – as an analyst or as a coach. So it should be no huge shock that he has a very bold pick for his No. 1 player in the NFL right now.
On today’s edition of FOX NFL Sunday, Johnson declared that he would take Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert as his No. 1 pick among all NFL players today. He made it clear that he would take Herbert over Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes.
“In fact, if I was drafting in the NFL today out of all the players, my number 1 pick will be Justin Herbert,” Johnson said. “Over Mahomes.
Johnson found some agreement from fellow analyst Michael Strahan. “I can see it,” Strahan said.

It’s no secret that Justin Herbert is one of the fastest rising stars in the NFL right now. The second-year quarterback had a historic rookie season en route to Rookie of the Year honors in 2020.
This season, Herbert seems poised to climb even higher. He’s completing 69-percent of his passes and has nine touchdowns, three picks and nearly 1,200 passing yards through four games.
But Justin Herbert isn’t there yet. He’s still being way outpaced by Patrick Mahomes, who leads the NFL in touchdown passes. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is also making the stronger case for NFL MVP right now.
Is Jimmy Johnson onto something here though? Will Justin Herbert be the NFL’s top player by the end of the year?
