Kirk Herbstreit Has A Heartfelt Message For Dick Vitale

August 31, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

Earlier this month, longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale revealed that he was recently diagnosed with melanoma. Concern for the 82-year-old, who’s infectious personality has become a staple in college basketball, poured in from around the country.

Thankfully, Vitale shared that he is now cancer-free after undergoing surgery on June 28th to remove a growth from his nose. Since then, he’s quickly turned his focus to helping others who might be in the same boat.

One of the way that the broadcast personality is doing that is by encouraging everyone to take care of their own health and speak up if something isn’t right.

“My friends, I’ll end where I started. Take care of you,” Vitale said through ESPN earlier in August. “If you see or feel something, even if it’s not bothering you or infected, get it evaluated. Melanoma is serious and it can spread to your organs. Doctors told me that a typical basal cell skin cancer is like getting gently brushed by a bicycle, while melanoma is like getting hit by a truck.”

Vitale’s commitment to helping others, immediately after a serious health scare of his own, is just one of the reasons why he’s so well-loved in the sports broadcasting community. His ESPN co-worker Kirk Herbstreit sent him a touching message to not only celebrate the good news, but also commend the 82-year-old for spreading awareness about the importance of regular check-ups.

“Dickie V so glad that you’re cancer free after that diagnosis. Great you’re getting your message out for people to hear,” Herbstreit wrote on Twitter. “Good luck to your Irish this Fall!

Herbstreit echoed the thoughts of sports fans around the country who are thrilled to hear that Vitale is on the mend. Hopefully, his messages can help others stay healthy in the future.

Vitale said he plans to continue his recovery and that he’ll be ready to work the 2021-22 college basketball season.
