Cam Newton has not regained the starting quarterback job in Carolina yet, but he announced his return to the NFL this afternoon.
Newton, who was signed by the Panthers last week after being on the free agent market for the first nine weeks of the season, entered the game on Carolina’s first drive. On 1st-and-goal from the Arizona Cardinals’ 2-yard line, Newton carried it in for the touchdown.
After the score, he immediately let the camera–and the world–know that he is back.

Newton was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his celebration, but it was worth it. What a cool moment for Cam and Panthers fans.
Carolina elected to reunite with its former MVP passer after Sam Darnold suffered a shoulder injury last Sunday. Darnold will be out at least 4-to-6 weeks, and the Panthers are reportedly moving forward anticipating that he will miss the rest of the season.
Backup P.J. Walker is starting in Darnold’s place today, but it might not be long before Newton becomes QB1 once again. He clearly has already made an impact, and its still the first quarter of his first game back.
Carolina currently leads the 8-1 Cardinals 14-0 after two possessions. Newton was also responsible for the Panthers’ second touchdown, tossing a two-yard score to wide receiver Robby Anderson.
