Backup quarterback Colt McCoy was duped in a hilarious practical joke staged by the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday morning.
McCoy is active on Cameo, a site that allows fans to pay for personalized message from their favorite celebrities. For Kyler Murray’s 24th birthday today, quarterbacks coach Cam Turner bought a message from McCoy — but there was one catch. The Cardinals backup had no idea the message was for his QB1.
Using his mother-in-law’s credit card and a made up email to remain anonymous, Turner told McCoy the message was for a young quarterback named “Buddy.” The Arizona QB coach also threw in a joke about the ongoing Oklahoma vs. Texas rivalry in the Arizona quarterback room.
“I wanted to reach out and tell you happy birthday, man,” McCoy said. “I know you’re a quarterback, too, love the Longhorns. I just want to wish you good luck in training camp. Stay humble this season. Stay great. Be a leader. And, most importantly, today, enjoy your birthday, man. It’s special. God bless. See ya.”
During this morning’s quarterback meeting, Turner played the message on a projector screen.
The Cardinals posted McCoy’s hilarious reaction on Twitter.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury was also heavily involved in the planning of this QB practical joke.
Apparently McCoy originally denied the Cameo request, but Kingsbury and Turner anonymously offered to double his posted fee of $112 per video, per reports from Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.
“It was quite a process,” Kingsbury said, per ESPN. “We were stressing.”
“It was pretty genius,” he added. “One of the best ones I’ve ever seen, but it was hard to keep it to ourselves all week, knowing that it was gonna happen. It was well played.”
After spending the 2020 season with the New York Giants, McCoy signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals earlier this offseason.
