Mets President Gives Details On Jacob deGrom Injury, Recovery

September 8, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Jacob deGrom on the mound for the Mets.

Jacob deGrom was in position to win another Cy Young, when the New York Mets shut him down for an unspecified amount of time. DeGrom dealt with a bizarre string of injuries and other issues that caused him to miss a number of starts throughout the first half of the year, while he was nearly unhittable when he made it to the mound.

In 15 starts, deGrom is 7-2 with an outrageous 1.08 ERA. He has 146 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 92 innings this year. His last start came back on July 7.

When the team shut him down, it looked likely that he was done for the season. There have been some glimmers of hope that he may still return for the home stretch this season, as the Mets look to claw back into playoff contention over the last few weeks of the regular season.

Today, ahead of the team’s game against the Miami Marlins, Mets president Sandy Alderson gave some new details on the most recent deGrom injury. He says that the superstar pitcher suffered a sprain/partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow, but that the condition has “resolved itself.”

Sandy Alderson said Jacob deGrom’s elbow injury was a sprain/partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow.

But, Alderson emphasized, deGrom is fine now.

“The ligament is perfectly intact at this point,” he said. “Whatever condition existed before, it’s resolved itself.”

The “partial tear” terminology is jarring, but Alderson made sure to clarify that it can mean something that seems much less severe than what most think. “Somebody goes out with a headline that it’s a partial tear, that’s what a bruise is,” he continued, according to Tim Healey. “A bruise is a partial tear of the muscle, OK? So let’s not go out there and write as if this is anything new. It’s not.

“It’s a very low-grade thing that has resolved itself.”

That doesn’t mean that we’ll see Jacob deGrom return to the mound for the Mets before the season is out.

Alderson on deGrom: “I don’t expect he is going to get ramped up higher than 75 percent before we have an idea where this is going. In terms of him pitching the rest of the season, I think that is still very much up in the air.”

The Mets, who spent much of the year in first place before a post-All-Star Break collapse, sit at 69-69. The team is on the road at the Miami Marlins, before home series against the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies through mid September. From there, they travel to Boston for two games, and Milwaukee for a three-game set, before returning to Queens for four games against Miami. The Mets finish with three games against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.

New York trails the Braves by four games in the NL East, and are 4.5 games back of the San Diego Padres for the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
