The Michael Thomas offseason saga ramped up over the weekend, as troubling details emerged about the wide receiver’s lack of communication with the New Orleans Saints coaching staff over the summer. After the report came out, the two-time All-Pro sent out a cryptic tweet of his own on Monday, leading to only more questions about what’s going on in his relationship with his current team.
In potentially unrelated, the Saints appear to be exploring a notable trade with just over a month to go until their 2021 season opener. Sean Payton is in need of another cornerback before Week 1 and has looked into striking a deal for former Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick C.J. Henderson, per NOLA.com’s Jeff Duncan.
Henderson, the ninth overall pick in the 2020 draft, would be a solid pick-up for the Saints provided they have the assets to strike a deal with the Jaguars. NFL reporter Albert Breer might’ve found a solution, so he floated a potential idea for New Orleans to think about in a trade for the talented defensive back: deal former Ohio State wideout Michael Thomas back to Urban Meyer in Jacksonville.

Breer made clear that he wasn’t reporting anything about a potential Saints-Jaguars deal involving Thomas, but given everything that’s happened over the last few weeks, it might not be a bad idea for New Orleans to move on from their star wide receiver.
The drama began when it was revealed that Thomas needed to undergo late summer surgery, which would cause him to miss the beginning of the 2021 regular season. The Saints were reportedly not happy with the timing of the operation and were hoping that the 28-year-old wideout would get his ankle injury squared away earlier in the spring.
But that was just the beginning of the tension between New Orleans and Thomas. Over the weekend, a report revealed that two-time All-Pro was not taking calls from multiple members of the Saints organization during the offseason.
“For unknown reasons, Thomas fell out of communication with the Saints. He did not return multiple calls over the next three months,” Jeff Duncan wrote, via NOLA.com. “Then-Saints trainer Beau Lowery, wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson and head coach Sean Payton all tried to reach Thomas. None of their calls were taken or returned.”
On Monday, Thomas took to Twitter and posted a strange comment of his own, sparking only more questions from those trying to figure out what’s going on between him and the Saints.
“They tried to damage your reputation. You saved theirs by not telling your side of the story,” Thomas wrote.
All in all, the tension between the star receiver and the Saints seems to be mounting. Unless Thomas is able to clear the air with the powers that be in New Orleans, the organization might just choose to move on and trade him the Jacksonville or elsewhere.
