Bill Belichick had a very telling response to a question about the quarterback decision on Sunday evening.
The Patriots head coach has been pretty clear throughout the offseason: Cam Newton is the team’s starting quarterback. Belichick’s tune has changed as of late, though.
Belichick said earlier this week that the starting quarterback decision was yet to be made. He doubled down on that following Sunday’s preseason finale against the Giants.
“No, we still have a lot of decisions to make,” Belichick said when asked if the quarterback decision had been made.
Question: Looking ahead to the regular season, have you made a decision on who will start at quarterback in the opener?

That’s a very telling response. Fans are intrigued.
“If Bill has hope for the season, it’ll be Cam. If not, it’ll be Mac. Just a hunch. If he chooses the rook, it’ll be because he’s on a whim,” one fan tweeted.
“Mac Jones made significant progress and it has apparently caught Bill Belichick’s attention,” another fan added.

Of course, Belichick might just be keeping things as close to the vest as possible. After all, he’s done that several times in the past.
Still, it’s obvious that the quarterback decision isn’t etched in stone. The Week 1 starter might not be the starter throughout the regular season.
New England opens the season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against Miami.
