Green Bay Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess found himself in a lot of hot water this weekend after using a racial slur and hand gesture at a press conference. While he’s since apologized, the man who signs his paychecks was not pleased.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst called Funchess’ actions “unacceptable” and said that he’s spoken to Funchess about it. He didn’t announce any punishments for the Packers wideout.
“Very unacceptable,” Gutekunst said. “We’ve addressed it with Devin. He knows it was unacceptable.”
Last night Funchess used an anti-Asian slur and pointed to his eyes when he told reporters that he can see them smiling while masked. The action was quickly met with condemnation online.

Devin Funchess isn’t exactly in a position to have room for error this summer. He opted out of the 2020 season – his first with the Packers – but re-signed with the team on a one-year deal after the season.
With only one NFL game played since 2019, Funchess is probably on the bubble as the Packers finalize their roster. Mistakes like that won’t help – even if he balls out in the preseason and training camp.
Assuming the Packers don’t cut him in the upcoming days, he’s going to be walking on eggshells for a while.
It’s a big mistake for Funchess. Will he pay for it with his job?
