Patriots Add Veteran LB After Losing Player To Torn ACL

The Patriots are in need of help at the linebacker position following Saturday’s unfortunate injury news.

New England linebacker Raekwon McMillan suffered a torn ACL this week in practice. He’ll miss the entirety of the 2021 season, as a result, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport. It’s an unfortunate setback for the young linebacker and the Patriots defense as a whole.

Considering the timing, New England needed to work quickly to add more depth at the position. The Patriots did so on Saturday by bringing back a familiar face: linebacker Cassh Maluia.

Per NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Patriots are expected to bring back Maluia. New England took him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft before cutting him earlier this year.

With Raekwon McMillan out for the season, the #Patriots are bringing back an old friend: They’re expected to re-sign LB Cassh Maluia, source said. The sixth-round pick in 2020 played in nine games as a rookie, but was cut in March after New England signed McMillan.

Cassh Maluia, like Raekwon McMillan, will provide depth for the Patriots’ linebackers unit.

McMillan has had a brutal stretch of injuries throughout his career. He tore his ACL during training camp of his rookie year in Miami. He then tore his ACL in the other knee earlier this week. We wish him luck during his recovery.

The Patriots, meanwhile, have to move on. The 2021 season is fast approaching and the Pats have plenty of position battles to get sorted out, particularly at quarterback.

Rookie Mac Jones is reportedly inching closer and closer to getting the start at quarterback over the veteran Cam Newton. Jones’ ability to drive the ball downfield may be playing a factor in the race for the starting gig.

We will get a good look at Jones in the Patriots offense on Thursday, Aug. 12 when they take on the Washington Football Team in the preseason.
