Like the rest of the NFL, the New England Patriots trimmed down their roster on Monday. In doing so, they moved on from a veteran defensive back.
The Patriots released veteran safety Adrian Colbert on Monday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 27-year-old had signed with the New England Patriots back in May of this year. He’ll now hit the free-agent market.
The 49ers took Colbert in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He surpassed expectations, starting 12 games and appearing in 21 in his first two years in the NFL. He then spent the 2019 season with the Miami Dolphins and 2020 season with the New York Giants. His role diminished each of his four years in the league.
Colbert is now a free agent with just over a week to go until the start of the 2021 season. The Patriots, meanwhile, will have to cut their roster down to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon.

The Patriots had a strong preseason showing, leading many to believe a bounceback year is in the works. The real question is at quarterback.
Mac Jones looked excellent in his preseason appearances, but so did Cam Newton. The veteran quarterback will start until told otherwise. It’s probably going to take poor play on Newton’s part for Jones to replace him as the starting quarterback.
The preseason is in the books. The Patriots will begin the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Miami Dolphins.
