A notable wide receiver is officially on the open market this Tuesday. In a surprising turn of events, the Las Vegas Raiders have released John Brown.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Raiders actually released Brown because that was his request. It’s unclear what went on behind the scenes in Las Vegas.
“Raiders WR John Brown requested his release and the team granted it, per source. ‘Smoke’ is back on the market,” Pelissero said.
Brown signed a one-year contract with the Raiders in March. He was expected to be Nelson Agholor’s replacement since he’s very capable of making big plays downfield.
Injuries prevented Brown from having a big season in 2020, but he proved in 2019 that he can be a dangerous playmaker in the right system.

Teams in need of help at wide receiver should have interest in Brown, especially since he’s relatively healthy.
As for the Raiders, they’ll need to rely heavily on the trio of Henry Ruggs III, Bryan Edwards and Hunter Renfrow. They’re currently listed as the starting wide receivers for Week 1.
Behind that trio on the depth chart are Zay Jones and Willie Snead IV. Perhaps they’ll have steady roles in Jon Gruden’s offense this fall as well.
The Raiders will begin the 2021 season on Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens.
