Earlier Tuesday morning, the New England Patriots made a surprising decision on quarterback Cam Newton.
The Patriots made the decision to release the former MVP earlier today as part of the team’s roster cuts. The move took many by surprise, leaving rookie quarterback Mac Jones as the starting quarterback.
Following the news, Patriots insider Doug Kyed hinted at why the decision was made. He said the decision to release the former No. 1 overall pick came down to two factors.
“A couple of factors in play with releasing Cam Newton rather than keeping him on as the Patriots’ backup: His command of the locker room, and his vaccination status. Neither make him an ideal choice as a backup behind a rookie QB,” Kyed said on Twitter.

Newton himself took to social media after the move and said he appreciated his time with the Patriots. “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say… please don’t feel sorry for me!! #imgood” Newton wrote.
During his first and only season as the Patriots starting quarterback, he led the team to a 7-8 record in 15 games, completing a solid 65.8-percent of his throws. However, he struggled through the air, accounting for just 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
He found much more success as a rusher, going for 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground.
Where will he land next?
