Report: Former Commanders Draft Pick Named Trade Candidate

July 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Even after it’s been one season in the NFL, the Washington Commanders’ 2024 draft pick Luke McCaffrey could be a possible trade candidate this upcoming campaign. According to a source, they believe the wideout could be on the trade block, which is interesting since the pass-catcher has yet to prove that he could be a reliable playmaker in the league. It’s rare for an NFL roster, especially for the Commanders, to trade away a talent early in his career. However, it might happen if Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel and Michael Gallup get the majority of the snaps this upcoming season, but there should be no worries anytime soon if the Commanders trade McCaffrey.

Originally selected as a third-round pick, the former Nebraska and Rice product started just four games, recording 18 receptions for 168 receiving yards but no touchdowns. If the Commanders end up trading Terry McLaurin and Samuel is looking slow at practice, the team should keep McCaffrey since they want to build a reliable homegrown offensive weaponry for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Despite that, a trade would only make sense, maybe during the 2025 season, if the Commanders are enduring a losing campaign, which could be unlikely due to Daniels’ potential. Even though there’s been a lot of confidence in Washington, it shouldn’t be surprising if the Commanders trade McCaffrey if they get a solid offer this season from these three teams.

Report: Former Commanders Draft Pick Luke McCaffrey Named Trade Candidate – 3 Logical Fits

Possible Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have finally made plenty of improvements at the receiver position after drafting Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. The bad news is that Harris is holding out, and veteran Mike Williams is more of a former shell of his old self. Right now, 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is probably the only reliable weapon in Justin Herbert’s offense. Quentin Johnston hasn’t proven that he’s a long-term option, and someone like Luke McCaffrey could fill in the hole to be a capable slot receiver alongside McConkey.

He has similar footwork, size and agility to haul in catches from Herbert in the aerial attack. He won’t make an immediate impact on the field, but it could save the Chargers’ offense if they have another depleted season of not having a consistent offensive weapon.

Kansas City Chiefs

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs don’t necessarily need another wide receiver since they have Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown, but they need a long-term weapon to continue building in the background. After signing Tyquan Thornton to the practice squad, the Chiefs know how to bring out the best in a weapon. Thornton never got the chance to play, but Justin Watson is a good example of how a receiver can change their career around after spending some time in Kansas City. Perhaps, if the Commanders are willing to trade McCaffrey, he could find his footing catching passes from Mahomes in slant routes.

New Orleans Saints

However, the New Orleans Saints need all of the weapons in the world to have a good outcome offensively. After losing Derek Carr to retirement, they will need to hold their breath for Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler to make plays. Why not just bring in some homegrown talent like McCaffrey to build chemistry behind Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed?
