Report: Former Commanders Draft Pick On Trade Block? – 5 Suitors May Emerge

June 2, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After spending just one season with the New England Patriots, the team could make running back Antonio Gibson available on the trade block. According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, the source believes the Patriots may trade the running back, which would save them about $2.3 million in cap savings. Originally selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Memphis product became a key specialist for the Washington Football Team (Commanders) to begin his career. Gibson didn’t see a lot of playing time until he joined the Patriots last season, hoping to be a worthwhile backup, recording 120 carries for 538 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

It’s not impressive numbers, but it was enough to give some type of support behind Rhamondre Stevenson, who already had one of the worst campaigns. However, the Patriots have an “odd man out” in Gibson since they’ve drafted Ohio State TreVeyon Henderson despite the running back having a reliable track record as a pass-catcher. It won’t be the first time he was a trade candidate, and being that Henderson will likely win the job, it could make Gibson expendable. The Patriots are in the middle of a rebuild ever since they hired head coach Mike Vrabel, and Gibson isn’t the clear guy as the future of this ground game.

The running back might not garner the best market, but these five teams could take a chance on him.

Next Possible Teams

Washington Commanders

Nobody should rule out a possible reunion. The Washington Commanders have a promising offense under quarterback Jayden Daniels, leading the pack as long as he can perform like he did in 2024. However, the running back unit can’t seem to stay consistent as both Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler are on the hot seat. If these two can’t garner much yardage to keep moving this offense, they could bring back Gibson to continue to salvage even the passing unit.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys still have one of the league’s worst running backs. 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue has a ton of promise, but he won’t be ready until he learns the playbook. New free agent signees, Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, will hope to hold down the fort for the time being. However, no one should expect that, since both are washed up. Gibson won’t make an immediate impact, but they could bring him in to rotate around the backfield pieces.

New Orleans Saints

Even though the Saints had one of the worst seasons in organization history last year, it didn’t stop running back Alvin Kamara from earning another contract after having a phenomenal campaign. The same can’t be said about Jamaal Williams, who got cut this offseason. Gibson won’t take over Kamara’s job, but, being that Kamara is aging, they could use him to lessen the stress.

Kansas City Chiefs

Isiah Pacheco is on the hot seat entering the 2025 regular season. Elijah Mitchell is joining to help bring some relief behind Pacheco and veteran Kareem Hunt. He’s more of a temporary solution, and if he doesn’t work out and Hunt retires after the season, they could sign Gibson if he becomes available.

Baltimore Ravens

Just like the Saints, the Ravens themselves have a reliable backfield. However, they might need a backup even though they have Justice Hill and Keaton Mitchell, who have some type of promise. Gibson has more experience than Mitchell and could form a duo with Hill as a reliable screen catcher.
