REPORT: Patriots “Interested” In Terry McLaurin Trade

July 21, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is one of the NFL’s most popular trade targets, and with good reason. Widely considered to be one of the league’s better wide receivers, the former third-round pick wants a new contract after recording 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

With contract talks stalling, Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer believes the New England Patriots could try and trade for Terry McLaurin if the Washington Commanders start listening to offers. Breer adds that Washington will “take a swing” at extending him before training  camp, but if that fails, New England could add even more support for second-year quarterback Drake Maye.

Report: Patriots Will Try to Trade For Terry McLaurin

Drake Maye was perhaps the only bright side in an otherwise disastrous 2024, and New England has done everything in their power to support him in 2025. The team fortified the offensive line with right tackle Morgan Moses, center Garrett Bradbury, and left tackle Will Campbell while adding veteran Stefon Diggs and third-round pick Kyle Williams to the passing game. All of these players should be upgrades from the 2024 equivalents, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t work to be done here.

Even if Diggs is healthy, the Patriots have one of the league’s worst wide receivers. Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas are nothing special, Kendrick Bourne is getting older, and 2024 draft picks Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker had atrocious rookie seasons. Diggs and Williams have potential, but a Terry McLaurin trade will ensure Maye has at least one reliable playmaker throughout the season.

Of course, it’s hard to envision the Commanders pulling the trigger on a Terry McLaurin trade. The team made the NFC Championship Game last year with Daniels and should have their eyes set on the Super Bowl. Trading McLaurin will only decrease their odds of winning it all, and they have the cap space to pay up for McLaurin’s services.
