Report: Patriots Wide Receiver Named Cut Candidate – 4 Possible Fits

June 26, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After spending the last four seasons with the New England Patriots, it looks like wide receiver Kendrick Bourne will be a cut candidate before the 2025 regular season begins. The Patriots are in a logjam in their receiving corps, where there’s a ton of talent, but this will force the team to trim the roster to 53 players like every other roster, and Bourne might not make the cut. It might be easier to release him rather than ending up on the practice squad, since he might be better off joining a team that needs another pass-catcher. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report believes Bourne should be on the radar of every NFL roster out there, which is true, being that he’s still somewhat a reliable wideout.

Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Eastern Washington product got a chance with the San Francisco 49ers, but he was never able to live up to the expectations for just three seasons on the team. The Patriots drafted Kyle Williams this year and signed Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins, so since these receivers will eat up most of the snaps, it makes sense for New England to part ways with the weapon. However, head coach Mike Vrabel may make him available for a trade first before releasing him so they can continue to net some draft capital to rebuild their roster, but either way, here are the five teams that could get him if he becomes a free agent.

Report: Patriots Wide Receiver Kendrick Bourne Named Cut Candidate – 5 Possible Fits

Potential Destinations

Dallas Cowboys

Despite trading for George Pickens, the Dallas Cowboys should stack up on pass-catching weapons to put quarterback Dak Prescott in the best position. Between Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, they will pick up most of the snaps, but they could use someone like Kendrick Bourne in the middle in situational moments alongside Jalen Tolbert, who is entering the final year of his contract. Jonathan Mingo has been a disappointment since arriving in Dallas last year, so if he doesn’t step up, they could invest in a one-year deal on Bourne.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers need another wide receiver in the worst way. Quentin Johnston hasn’t improved these past two seasons, and veteran Mike Williams is washed up. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey and recent draft acquisition Tre Harris are probably the lone weapons that might be capable of complementing quarterback Justin Herbert. Bourne might not be dynamic, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a chance on him to bolster this unit.

Washington Commanders

However, the Commanders could use one more weapon to bolster the receiving corps for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Luke McCaffrey is still developing, and Michael Gallup is still working his way back to being a consistent ball-catcher. It will come down to Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel getting most of the balls thrown their way, so why not get someone like Bourne to serve as a possible WR3?

Pittsburgh Steelers

After being in several rumors of the Steelers potentially targeting a wide receiver, they must search for one sooner rather than later. While DK Metcalf will become WR1 for Aaron Rodgers’ offense, they could use another veteran presence to help push for Rodgers’ potential last Super Bowl run behind Robert Woods, Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin. The team signed Scotty Miller in free agency, but Bourne could help him as a WR2 in the slant routes and as a possible deep threat.
