Robert Saleh Shares Honest Admission On Zach Wilson’s Future

Zach Wilson‘s professional career is off to a bumpy start.

Wilson and the Jets‘ contract negotiations trickled into training camp and the former BYU star missed a couple practices as a result. He’s since joined his new teammates in the Big Apple, but it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows.

The Jets held a game-like scrimmage inside MetLife Stadium over the weekend. Wilson was reportedly pretty awful. He apparently completed less than half his throws, struggled getting the offense down the field and wound up leading the Jets offense to just three points. It was an ugly early showing from the No. 2 overall pick.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh isn’t worried, though. He’s well aware Wilson is going to struggle plenty of times throughout his rookie campaign.

“For most rookies, it’s going to get worse before it gets better,” Saleh said, via SNY Jets. “It is what it is. There’s a lot of things that happen. There’s a reason why being a rookie is hard in this league. There was a Hall of Famer yesterday that was inducted that had a 71 quarterback rating his rookie year. It’s not easy to play quarterback in this league as a rookie. Especially quarterback. It is going to get worse before it gets better. He’s at that point now where he’s going to be able to stack up days. We got the utmost confidence in him and his ability and his ability to figure out his mistakes, correct them and get to a better place.”

Robert Saleh references Peyton Manning while evaluating Zach Wilson’s game:

It’s better Zach Wilson makes most of his mistakes now as opposed to during the regular season.

Robert Saleh’s right, too. Wilson has to struggle and learn from his mistake to become a great NFL quarterback.

We’ll get a good look at Wilson when the Jets begin their preseason schedule this Saturday, Aug. 14 against the New York Giants.
