Ron Rivera Presser: We’re playing our guys vs the Patriots, we want to see Ryan Fitzpatrick take command of the offense

Ron Rivera speaks with the media after Sunday morning’s practice in Ashburn

LIVE: Coach Rivera speaks to the media after practice https://t.co/Qne95dok7e

— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) August 8, 2021

Offensive line:

Ron Rivera says that they’re still rolling some people around with the 1s on the offensive line. That’s one of the things they’re looking for this preseason

— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 8, 2021

Cornelius Lucas:

Washington consistently played the same 5 with the starting OL, but Ron Rivera says they’re still rolling guys around.

On Cornelius Lucas, who has been playing LT with 2s: “I just think he has to continue to get in football shape. … He’s going to work both sides.”

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 8, 2021

Ron Rivera explained that Cornelis Lucas will get some work with the 1s, as they keep rolling guys.

After the time off, being on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Lucas still needs to get back into football shape. He’s also going to work on both sides of the line

Starters vs the Patriots on Thursday:

“Oh, we’re going to play our guys on Thursday,” Ron Rivera said regarding his better players. He said they’ll play enough. He wants to see command, wants to see some success, too, from Ryan Fitzpatrick as QB1

— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 8, 2021

QB competition:

The preseason games, Rivera said, will give him a chance to get a good view of where the quarterbacks are at through three weeks.

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWFT) August 8, 2021

Ryan Fitzpatrick:

Rivera said his decision making in the system has improved. He’s getting more comfortable and building a rapport with his teammates.

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWFT) August 8, 2021

In Thur game vs. New England, Rivera said he wants to see Ryan Fitzpatrick’s command of the offense, command of what’s going on on the field. Etc. wants success, but knows “those things come with time.” Other stuff leads to success.

— John Keim (@john_keim) August 8, 2021

Taylor Heinicke:

Rivera said he’s not “overly concerned” with Heinicke’s turnovers in practice. He said so much of Heinicke’s game depends on movement outside the pocket, and that doesn’t happen as much during practice.

— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 8, 2021

Cameron Cheeseman:

Rivera said Camaron Cheeseman has been very good, with the exception of a bad snap at FedExField. Has been very steady snapping the ball

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWFT) August 8, 2021

We talked about the poor Cheeseman snap from Friday night on our pod, and Ron just said he wants Cheeseman to understand that, when he’s snapping from 7 or 8 yards away, he doesn’t need to “gun it.” Watching it live, it did seem like the snap was pretty high and hot

Curtis Samuel groin injury:

Ron on Curtis Samuel: “You’d love him to catch a few reps maybe in the last preseason game.” https://t.co/B4TZygBhiS

— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 8, 2021

Matt Ioannidis:

Matt Ioannidis wasn’t feeling well today, per Rivera, hence why he wasn’t on the field.

— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 8, 2021

Coach:

We thanked Ron at the end of his presser as we tend to do and as he walks away, he turns and goes, “It’s coach” with a wink. Clearly, he saw that Jason Garrett exchange a couple of days ago. Well done bit there

— Pete Hailey (@PeteHaileyNBCS) August 8, 2021

Ron Rivera ended his presser and some reporters said, “Thank you, Ron.”

He turned around with a wide smile and said: “Oh, it’s coach.” Then he winked and walked off. “Just kidding,” he said.

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 8, 2021

Cole Boozer:

Ron Rivera, on why new OT Cole Boozer was led off the field before the start of practice: “He didn’t know the offense and we didn’t want to expose him right away. We wanted to at least get a chance to work with him before he goes to work.”

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 8, 2021

Jimmy Moreland:

Rivera on Jimmy Moreland: “very steady guy; headsy guy. He has a slickness to him that plays really well within what we do… These three games will be very interesting to watch.”
Rivera said another slot CB Darryl Roberts has become more comfortable.
