On Friday afternoon, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that one of the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers requested a trade from the organization.
“Steelers’ WR James Washington, a former 2018 second-round pick, has approached the Steelers and requested a trade based on his limited playtime last season and so far this preseason,” Schefter reported at the time.
Schefter rarely misses on his reports. However, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made it abundantly clear Washington hasn’t approached the team about a trade.
At least not yet.
“He has not,” Tomlin said when asked if Washington asked for a trade. “Those unnamed sources, we don’t react to or respond to. James has been great here, working, having a good camp.”

For what it’s worth, folks.

During the 2019 season, he had 44 catches for 735 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately for Washington, he fell behind on the depth chart when the Steelers drafted wide receiver Chase Claypool.
With the former Notre Dame star emerging last season, Washington, also a former second-round pick, had just 30 receptions for 392 yards and five touchdowns in 2020.
Tomlin might be trying to drive up the price of Washington my saying he’s not available in the trade. However, there would be plenty of reason for the wide receiver to want out.
He’s fourth on the depth chart and doesn’t have a clear path to more playing time outside of an injury to one of the starters.
