When Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz spoke to reporters at OTAs last month, he was asked about star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. While Wentz and McLaurin hadn’t yet shared the practice field due to McLaurin skipping OTAs, Wentz acknowledged he’d been in contact with McLaurin.
Now that McLaurin has signed his three-year extension, he will report to training camp later this month and catch passes from his new quarterback. McLaurin is thrilled to work with Wentz.
“I’m excited to get out with Carson Wentz,” McLaurin said at Wednesday’s press conference. “I’m jumping on a flight after this to go throw with him and a few of the guys. So I’m really excited for the future, and I’m happy to be part of this, what we’re doing forward here in Washington.”
McLaurin’s first NFL game in 2019 was against the Philadelphia Eagles. Wentz was the quarterback that day. Wentz was outstanding that day, passing for 313 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Eagles to victory.
However, in his NFL debut, McLaurin stole the show, catching five passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. If not for a Case Keenum overthrow, McLaurin would have scored another long touchdown early in the second half and likely would’ve gone over 200 receiving yards in his first game.
McLaurin remembered that day vividly.
“Honestly, I remember my rookie year, and we played Philly,” McLaurin said. “I remember watching him play and the way he threw a deep ball; I was almost enamored by it, you know, and his toughness in the pocket. Like, I don’t think a lot of people give him enough credit.”
Now, McLaurin will be catching those deep balls from Wentz.
