The Houston Texans have a notable lack of depth at wide receiver headed into the 2021 season. With controversy already surrounding the quarterback position, the organization decided that it need to go look for pass-catching talent this week with the start of the regular season just around the corner.
That’s why Houston brought in a two-time Super Bowl champion for a workout before this weekend.
The Texans reportedly hosted veteran wide receiver Danny Amendola for a try-out on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Field Yates. The 35-year-old has gone unsigned since the end of the 2020 season, when he played for the Detroit Lions.
Amendola has some familiarity with the leadership in Houston, which could make a deal more likely. New Texans general manager Nick Caserio was the director of player personnel in New England when the slot receiver played for the Patriots.
The two may be head for a reunion if Houston liked what it saw out of Amendola on Tuesday.
Here’s an interesting workout: the Texans tried out free agent WR Danny Amendola.
He’s very familiar with their GM Nick Caserio from their time together in New England.

Amendola has played in the last 12 NFL seasons in some capacity, after coming into the league as a undrafted free agent in 2008. He began on the practice squads of the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, but earned his first major opportunity with the Rams in 2009.
After four years in St. Louis, Amendola made way for New England where he went onto win two Super Bowls with the Patriots. He made key contributions to the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady offenses for five years, even amidst a crowded wide receiver room.
Amendola played the last two seasons for the Lions, where he proved to be a reliable target for Matthew Stafford. In 2020, he played in 14 games and made 46 catches for 602 yards.
Amendola’s best playing days might be behind him, especially with his lengthy injury history. However, he can still be a contributor on a team with a lack of experienced wide receivers, like the Texans.
Time will tell if Houston decides to take a shot on the two-time Super Bowl champ.
