The Dolphins Have Released A Veteran Offensive Lineman

August 31, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Ravens players pat center Matt Skura on the helmet.

Every year, we see several players around the league unexpectedly released when it is time to cut down to 53-man rosters. The latest surprise comes out of Miami, where the Dolphins have released a veteran offensive lineman.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Dolphins cut center Matt Skura today. The Dolphins had signed Skura to a one-year, $1.75 million contract in March.

But the timing of the move does make some sense. Over the weekend, the Dolphins acquired offensive lineman Greg Mancz from the Baltimore Ravens.

The acquisition of Mancz, combined with the surprise rise of rookie Liam Eichenberg, appears to have made Skura the odd man out on Miami’s interior offensive line.

Another #Ravens trade: Baltimore is sending versatile OL Greg Mancz to the #Dolphins with a late-round pick swap being the compensation, sources say. Solid, new depth for Miami.

Matt Skura joined the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Duke in 2017. He started 12 games at right guard as a rookie but moved to center the following year.

Skura started all 16 games for Baltimore in 2018, helping the team reach the playoffs after a three-year drought. He started the first 11 games of the 2019 season before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

In 2020, Skura regressed a bit, notably botching several snaps in a loss to the New England Patriots. The team chose not to re-sign him after the season, letting him hit free agency.

Luckily for Skura, starting centers who can also play guard are at a premium in the NFL. He might not have to wait long before finding a new team.
