Cam Newton and Mac Jones are competing for the starting quarterback job in New England. Because of that, it wouldn’t be surprising if there was a bit of animosity between the two players.
That does not appear to be the case, though.
Jones played really well on Sunday night, completing 10 of 14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Newton, meanwhile, was just 2 for 5 for 10 yards and an interception.
Newton did his best to support Jones after his stellar play, though.

Newton has spoken highly of Jones throughout training camp and the preseason.
“Every young quarterback goes through it,” Newton said of Jones. “The excitement. The anticipation. He wants to be so perfect. And I see his preparation is always pristine. That’s what I admire about him, at such a young age, he knows how to prepare.
“He knows when Josh [McDaniels] asks good questions, or when a person asks good questions, he knows how to kinda have answers for it.”
Jones spoke highly of Newton following his return to practice, too.
“It was good,” the first-round QB said, per ESPN NFL insider Mike Reiss. “He came in this morning and everyone was happy to see him. Glad to have him back. Even today, there was something that popped up – he did something with the ‘mike’ – and I can kind of learn from what he did. We talked it through.”
The Patriots open the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Dolphins.
