They say practice makes perfect. Third-year Chiefs running back Darwin Thompson is hoping a whole lot of practice will make a whole lot of perfect.

Thompson is well aware he has some work to do if he’d like to make the Chiefs’ final 53-man roster. He put in the work on Monday.

After the Chiefs’ Monday practice, Thompson did a few hill sprints at Spratt Memorial Stadium. When asked why, the third-year running back kept things simple: “I got work to do.”

That’s some impressive effort from the Chiefs’ third-year running back. Let’s hope Darwin Thompson’s efforts pay off by the time the 2021 season commences.

Thompson, the Utah State alum, is running third or fourth on the Chiefs’ running back depth chart. Clyde Edward-Helaire figures to be the starter. Darrel Williams figures to be backup with Thompson and Jerick McKinnon fighting for third.

If McKinnon lands the No. 3 gig, Thompson could be a player that finds himself on the trade block ahead of the 2021 season. The Chiefs have traditionally used the month of August to trade players behind on the depth chart. Thompson could be one of those players. He still has two years left on his rookie contract. There’s not much reason for the Chiefs to keep Thompson around if he’s running fourth on the depth chart.

Thompson’s future with the Chiefs could be in doubt, but he’s definitely making the most of the situation.
