The Washington Football Team won the NFC East last season with a 7-9 record. The benefit, if you want to call it that, is you get to play a first-place schedule the following season.
That’s Washington’s predicament in 2021. The Football Team has a loaded schedule that features all four participants from last season’s conference championship games. Washington also plays three out of four road division games to end the 2021 season.
Do you want elite passers? Washington’s schedule has that, too, with Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson on the slate.
Regarding Brady and Mahomes, those are two games Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne is looking forward to in 2021.
After Sunday’s practice, Payne met with the media and was asked which teams he looks forward to facing this season. Payne didn’t hesitate.
“I know I really want to get the Bucs again,” Payne said, per Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic. “We get a chance to play them again, so I’m happy about that. I haven’t played the Chiefs yet, so I’m excited about that game.”
Why does Payne want the Bucs so badly?
“I just feel like, defensive-wise, we left a lot on the table, you know?” he said. “It’s just a chance for us to go back out there and just get it back.”
Payne is right. Washington’s highly touted defense did leave a lot on the table in that game. Tampa Bay and Brady went for over 500 yards in the game. It was Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke who kept the Football Team in the game.
Washington and Tampa Bay meet on Nov. 14 in a game that could feature two of the NFC’s best teams. Some in the media have pegged Washington as the team that could give the defending Super Bowl champions a run for their money in 2021.
It’s good to see Washington players still miffed about that game and excited about a rematch.
