“All progress comes as a result of change, but not all change is progress.”
Wise words, meaning, in life you are going to have to make changes to gain progress, but don’t simply be making change for the sake of change, because that will not necessarily lead to progress.
Wednesday morning Feb. 2, on the NBC Today Show the Washington Football Team will officially announce its new name, uniform and logo.
There have been these types of changes previously with the franchise, so on Monday and Tuesday, Washington Wire will provide a jet tour through some of these changes.
In the early 1930’s George Preston Marshall desired a franchise in the struggling professional football league being hosted by many smaller towns. The league leaking teams, Marshall was informed by the league he could have a team but they wanted the team in Boston for the 1932 season.
Marshall then named the team the “Braves” as the MLB Boston Braves (NL) playing at Braves Field, welcomed Marshall’s NFL franchise to also play at the facility.
Marshall’s first team in Boston finished their inaugural season 4-4-2. However, fans did not support the football Braves as much as expected, two owners departed, leaving Marshall alone, the team lost money, and the MLB Braves wanted to raise the rent on the football Braves.
Consequently, after the one season (1932), Marshall determined he would relocate his football version of the Boston Braves to another facility in town, Boston’s Fenway Park, which was home to MLB’s Boston Red Sox (AL).
Playing in a new facility and joining a new MLB team, Marshall deemed it best to no longer continue to be named the Boston Braves. Seeing Fenway already housed the Red Sox, the new team would be the Redskins.
However, the Redskins not being supported enough, Marshall would move his franchise after the 1936 season to Washington, where he owned a laundry business. He would join MLB’s Washington Senators playing at Griffith Stadium beginning in the 1937 season.
