Zach Wilson Had A Pretty Brutal Practice On Saturday

As the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, rookie quarterback Zach Wilson is expected to have an immediate impact as a Week 1 starter later this fall. But according to his practice stats on Saturday, the Jets’ franchise savior has a long way to go before he’s ready to take the field in New York.

Last night, the Jets held a Green vs. White intra-team scrimmage in MetLife Stadium.

Fans gathered to get their first look at Wilson in simulated game action. Needles to say, he didn’t exactly deliver on his lofty expectations.

Wilson went 11 of 24 for 112 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Through seven drives, the former BYU standout produced just three points — finishing four drives with punts, two with interceptions and one with a field goal, per Jets insider Connor Hughes.

As an undersized passer with very little big-game experience at the college level, fans and analysts have certainly had their doubts about Wilson’s ability to transition to the NFL game.

That being said, those doubts started to get swept under the rug after he was selected directly after fellow college star Trevor Lawrence. As one of the top QB prospects in this year’s class, the hype for a Wilson-led Jets team has been buzzing ever since draft night.

Wilson has accepted these lofty expectations. After last night’s scrimmage, the expected New York QB1 reacted to his poor performance.

“Not great,” Wilson said, per FanNation. “I have high expectations for myself, and for this offense, and I got to lead those guys, I got to make better decisions. But that’s why this isn’t Game 1. That’s why we’re doing this.”

Wilson and the Jets still have a little over a month to iron out the kinks before Week 1.

New York’s preseason schedule kicks off next week with a matchup against the Giants on Aug. 14.
